So far we have saved over 60,000 pounds of fabric scraps (Yes, that is over 30 ton) from going in the landfills simply because so many unselfish people have used these scraps for various projects. I have sent out over 1200 boxes at an average of about 50 pounds a box.

The Letter to Dear Abby that mentioned Magic Mike!!! that was published 1-12-97

At this time, I am not currently sending out any boxes of scraps due to some complications from my brain surgery I had a while ago. I now suffer from numerous and severe migraines every week and all the wonder drugs shown on TV do not help at all. I don't complain because without the surgery I would be dead, so I will gladly take the migraines. However, I am not up to packing boxes and shipping them, etc.

Please do not mail me any requests or questions about the scraps. I sometimes receive a few hundred requests a month and no longer can afford to pay postage to respond to all these letters! I am sorry for any inconvenience!

If you want to see some examples of what I have had in the recent past, click here.

Since the middle of 1995, I had been sending these scraps to people all over the country. All these people had to do was pay the UPS shipping charges to receive these scraps. However, then I had to rent a space to store the scraps so I had been forced to add a $5.00 per box fee to cover expenses.

Feel free to check with your fellow quilters on the
REC.CRAFTS.TEXTILES.QUILTING NEWSGROUP
to find out if there are any similar projects going on now.

Misc. Info

The average box weighed between 35 and 65 pounds and had cost anywhere from about $15.00 to $40.00; depending on how close you lived to Pennsylvania. If you had a set amount you wanted to spend and no more, you just mentioned that in your email and sent a check for that amount and I kept it very close to that amount. The boxes were mailed out approximately every month but it just depended on how busy I was. There was usually a waiting list of about 25 to 50 names so the sooner you got on the list, the sooner you would get a box. The biggest hold up in the past was the fact that I was paying to ship the boxes by UPS and waiting to get reimbursed by the people. However, that system took a long time for me to get my money back and in some cases, I still haven't been reimbursed for boxes sent out months and months ago. Thus the prepay system in force now.

I am sorry I am not currently sending out scraps but feel free to e-mail me, Magic Mike, Click Here to Contact Me with any info about similar projects or comments about this project.

This photo shows some of the more than 150 dresses I cut up and sent to the people at Seniors for Kids in Tucson, Arizona. It also shows some of the women who worked on them and got them done in time to give them out before Christmas. Unfortunately, I don't think I will ever get the chance to get anything big like this again.
